Vale Life Member Penny Marshall and ex Commodore Graham Gilbert

Penny Marshall died on 20 October 2025 and Graham Gilbert (95yo) on 10 August 2025.

The photo shows Penny presenting the trophies at the 1986 prize night (Warwick Phillips and Michael Stovin-Bradford looking on);

Life member Frank Walsh recalls both:

Graham is probably not known to most of the current MHASC members but he was a member for many years including as Commodore 1988 – 1990.  His last Laser was 116016.

He was responsible in a way for me purchasing my first Laser.

In September 1974, Graham was rigging a laser down at Balmoral Beach while I happened to be having a stroll.  After a short discussion, I decided that it was a much better boat for me than the old OK Dinghy, and immediately placed an order for Laser 14280, and the rest is history.

I lost touch with him quite some time ago, after having done a number of architectural projects for him, both at Glebe Island Container Terminal where he was General Manager, and also on his then house in Castlecrag.

Penny and Greg Marshall, along with their three children, were the heart and soul of MHASC when I first joined back in the late 1970’s

The family had four Lasers with Penny, Greg, Andrew and Tim all sailing regularly at the club and at association titles.  Penny then stepped out of her boat and became our RO. Both Penny and Greg were members of the club committee for all of their time at the club, before moving out of Sydney to Bonny Hills near Port Macquarie.
